If you are an avid gardener and have been looking for a chemical free way to keeping your garden green and pest free, you have come to the right page.
Essential oils are highly potent chemically complex compound structures at the molecular level. Their essence can deter several species of insects or attract some of them, based on which oils you use.
Many vegetable and flowering plants often fall prey to fungal attacks, bugs and worms of several varieties. The most common are:
Mexican Bean Beetle.
Tarnished Plant Bug.
Tomato Horn worm.
Slugs and snails.
While this is just a broad list category of bugs, beetles, worms and caterpillars, there are several other insects and birds that feast on your garden daily.
Ongoing research has shown that spraying chemical pesticides are not good for the plants. The vegetables and fruits it gives us ends up being toxic which will harm our bodies and those of the ones we love.
On the other hand, using essential oils is beneficial to the plant and the environment at large. It also does not poison the plants and the produce. It keeps away insects of all kinds, bugs and beetles, caterpillars and worms, even birds. Some of the best essential oils that are useful for spraying in the garden are:
Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca).
Peppermint oil has a very strong scent that repels most garden insects like Aphids, flies, beetles and spiders. Even ants do not like it.
Tea Tree oil is potent and helps fight fungal attacks on the plants. It is better to spray this oil on the stems of the plants and spray lightly on the leaves.
Rosemary oil repels many pests including larvae that eat up leaves. Spraying this oil on the leaves helps deter pests from chewing up leaves. It also attracts butterflies because of its woodsy scent.
Lavender oil attracts bees and butterflies which permit cross pollination and helps your plants produce more vegetables and fruits. Placing cotton balls drenched with essential oil near plants that have flowers attracts these garden friendly insects that help make your job as gardener easy!
Cinnamon has a pungent, strong earthy smell that deter a lot of pests. It also helps reduce the growth of weeds in your garden. Another sure fire way to reduce weeds in your garden is to hand pluck them yourself. This is good exercise for your fingers which keeps Arthritis at bay.
Orange oil is mild and has a sweet scent. It helps attract bees and butterflies. You can place cotton balls containing a mixture of rosemary, orange and lavender oils near flowering plants that will direct the bees and butterflies straight to those plants by way of wafting scents through the air.
Clove oil is aromatic which has a strong sweet and spicy scent, which keeps insects away.
How to use these essential oils in effective garden sprays: Mix 15 to 20 drops of essential oil in quarter to half a gallon of warm water, depending on how strong you want the mist spray to be. Spray this mixture at least 2 times a week over your garden. Continue reading on how each of these oils benefit your garden.
How to wash fruits with essential oils:
It is good to wash fruits from the supermarkets and grocery stores to get rid of pesticides and fungicides. In half to one gallon of water, add 6 to 8 drops of Orange or Lemongrass essential oils, along with half a cup of vinegar. You can also add a tablespoon of rock salt, and mix it well. Add your fruits and vegetables and wash them well before use.

Permanent to semi-permanent hair dyes are loaded with chemicals that are dangerous to our human bodies. Studies and research have found that there is a higher incidence for certain types of cancer – bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Leukemia, (cancer of the blood and bone marrow) and breast cancer.
PPD or Para-Phenylenediamine is a poisonous chemical, now banned in Europe, is used in the semi to permanent hair dyes. It was voted Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2006. This chemical is used in fabric dyes, cosmetics, printing and photocopying inks, photo developing chemicals. Fatal reactions experienced by the users of such dyes have prompted the European Union to use explicit warnings on the dye packets. 36 chemicals were found in hair dyes that were not safe to use by consumers. Some of the most dangerous ingredients used in hair dyes are; Ammonia, Peroxide, p-phenylenediamine, Diaminobenzene, Toluene-2,5-Diamine, Resorcinol and others. It is expected that the U.S government will be next to demand such explicit warnings on Chemical hair dye boxes.
Severe allergic reactions that caused death to two women and near death to the third woman prompted the EU to act at once. The Daily Mail and The Sun, two prominent newspapers in the U.K reported these cases.
Case # 1
Julie McCabe’s, 38, allergy started with severe itching and rashes. It caused her breathing problems, suffered a major cardio-respiratory arrest caused due to severe brain damage. She slipped into a coma and died 12 months later, never regaining consciousness. Reports by the UK Daily mail say that she kept using the hair dyes in spite of repeated allergic reactions.
Case # 2
Tabatha McCourt, only 17, was spending the night coloring her hair different colors when she had a violent reaction that included vomiting, difficulty breathing and sudden death.
Case # 3
Mariade Kelly, 29, struggled for her life for a 48 hour period, where the allergic symptoms worsened each hour threatening her life. She had trouble breathing. Her heart rate increased to a dangerous 180 beats per minute. Suffering from premature graying of her hair from her early 20’s, Mariade Kelly started using hair dyes. In this instance, she reported yellow pus oozing from her scalp and a horrific smell of burning flesh, which was the chemicals reacting with her scalp.

Natural Hair Dyes are safer than Chemical hair dyes. Research has shown us that using chemical hair dyes can have prolonged after effects, like unexplained headaches, severe migraines, loss of focus, nerve problems, and related health issues. Secondary problems currently being researched in the medical field show a correlation of disease to chemical hair dyes: a variety of cancers which include breast, bladder, leukemia, and possible kidney failure. However, definitive or conclusive findings are not in yet. Women are at greater risk of developing lupus, a serious blood disorder when using chemical hair dyes.
Scientists strongly suspect that chemical hair dyes can never be good for the health of one’s body. Absorption of chemicals by the human body can weaken human DNA and immunity, resistance to chemically caused cancers and tumors. Llanos, an assistant professor of epidemiology with the Rutgers School of Public Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, calls these “a variety of harmful exposures”. These inadvertent harmful exposures to chemicals through daily use of hair dyes, lipsticks, hair products, skin creams, and lotions can wreak harm on the human body in a big way. Repeated exposure to these chemicals can damage the body completely weakening our system.
“For the new study, researchers asked 4,285 white and black women in New York City and New Jersey about their past use of hair care products. Their ages ranged from 20 to 75. Nearly 2,280 were breast cancer survivors. The products included dyes, chemical relaxers and deep conditioning creams containing cholesterol or placenta. Cholesterol is marketed as a moisture restorer, and the placenta is sold as a hair repairer, Llanos said.”

Frankincense oil is extracted from the resin of the Boswellia carterii or Boswellia sacara tree that’s commonly grown in the Middle Eastern regions and Somalia. This tree can grow in extremely dry and arid conditions.
The Frankincense resin has been used by many different religions over the years, especially the Jewish and Christian religions, burning it as incense during worship. Frankincense got its importance because it was one of the first gifts given to Jesus by the wise men. Orange essential oil is extracted from the fruit peels of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). This citrus variety is a native of China. It is called sweet orange oil to distinguish it from other citrus family essential oils derived from bitter oranges – like the Bergamot essential oil obtained from Citrus bergamia.
The orange evergreen tree has dark green leaves with white flowers and bright orange round fruit, varying in size, with leather-like skin. The trees are native to China, but are now cultivated extensively in different parts of the world, especially America.
The main active components in orange essential oil are limonene, myrcene, citronellal, neral, alpha-pinene, geraniol, Linalool, and sabinene. These phytochemicals in essential oils are highly potent, and they act individually and together to bring about metabolic changes and benefits to the human body at the cellular level. The therapeutic properties of the orange oil are antiseptic, anti-depressant, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, carminative, diuretic, and a cholagogue (acts as a medicinal agent which promotes the discharge of bile from the system, purging it downward).
Orange oil blends well with these oils – black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, frankincense, sandalwood, and vetiver.
Benefits: Orange essential oil is used extensively in daily aromatherapy sessions to create the feeling of happiness and warmth for clients while calming nervous symptoms and digestive problems. People can use this oil to deal with colds and flu, It helps eliminate toxins from our bodies and stimulates the lymphatic system while helping the formation of collagen ( is the most abundant protein found in skin, blood vessels, digestive system, tendons, and bones).
Uses for Orange Essential Oil:
Control Acne:Orange oil can help reduce acne in people with oily skin. It helps cut the oil production by your skin glands. Add 5 – 6 drops of orange oil to a cup of water and wash the face with a soft towel before going to bed.
The Orange oil acts as an astringent, a deep pore cleanser when used with a light carrier oil like olive oil or sweet almond oil. Mix 4 – 6 drops of orange oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil and apply on your face with a cotton ball. Wipe after 5 minutes. This will help cleanse makeup off your face leaving your skin refreshed before going to bed at night.
For treating acne, use a cotton swab to dab a few drops of sweet orange oil on the acne. The antiseptic cleansing effect of the orange oil helps kill bacteria and clear up acne in a few days, depending on how worse your acne is.
Improve Dental Hygiene: This will help couples keep a better marriage. The refreshing smell of orange oil cannot only combat bad breath but help fight gum infections and inflammation such as gingivitis and pyorrhea. Orange oil reduces bacteria growth in the mouth and reduces gum inflammation resulting in a healthy mouth.
Add ½ teaspoon salt and 5 drops of orange oil to a cup of warm water. Use this after stirring well, for gargling. People who suffer from mouth ulcers find it helpful to numb the pain and reducing recurrence.
Relieve Seasonal Allergies: Seasonal allergies are usually caused by pollen and spores of mold. When these tiny particles are inhaled, the lining of the nasal passages gets inflamed and irritated.
During an allergy attack, white blood cells recognize micro foreign bodies trying to enter the body. They unleash an immune response against the allergen by releasing histamines. This starts the allergy reaction – the causation of red and itchy eyes and nose, which includes repetitive and uncontrollable sneezing. Orange essential oil can help stop the progression of allergic reactions caused by mold, pollen, and tiny spores
Always carry a small vial of orange oil during allergy season. Whenever you feel the slightest irritation in your nostrils, take a good long sniff of the oil. Allergic reactions can rapidly spread to your mucous membranes like the sinuses. This can result in nasal and sinus congestion including blinding headaches. Essential oil like Orange oil inhalation can help relieve these symptoms at once.
Improve Digestion: Orange oil can be used to improve digestion and it helps reduce flatulence and other stomach related problems.
To improve digestion, use 5-6 drops of sweet orange oil in the diffuser. Mix 3-4 drops of the oil in a teaspoonful of olive oil and gently rub on the abdominal area. This increases the secretion of digestive enzymes, improving daily digestion of food while relieving chronic gas and constipation. Use one drop of orange oil on a tissue and keep it near babies, who refuse to feed because of colicky pains. It will help relieve their symptoms.
Reduce Edema:Edema is defined medically as the swelling from fluid accumulation in the body tissues in certain areas of the body that is prone to water retention, like the face, legs, and feet.
Orange oil can be used to help reduce fluid retention greatly. Warm 3 tablespoons of olive oil and add 10 drops of sweet orange oil. Apply on your feet and massage it in gently. Have your spouse or family member do it for you on a daily basis till your symptoms reduce or are gone for good.
Another way to use orange essential oil for swollen feet is to add it into a relaxing foot bath. Add warm water to a wide plastic or aluminum basin then add a mixture of 2 tablespoons sea salt and 15 drops of orange essential oil. Immerse your tired and swollen feet in the water for 30 minutes. Do this daily and do not stop this practice for any reason as you age. This helps you relax every evening before going to bed while bringing down the swelling in your feet.
For facial edema, add a teaspoon of sea salt to a cup of warm water and stir in 5 drops of sweet orange essential oil. Use a cotton ball to dab this water under the eyes and on the cheeks and neck area.
Disinfect and clean surfaces: Orange essential oil has antiseptic properties. It can be used very effectively to clean frequently used surfaces like kitchen counters, cutting boards, cutlery and dining table to reduce bacteria growth. In fact, it is fast becoming a regular ingredient in cleaning products. Commercial cleaning liquids may contain chemical substances that are better avoided in the kitchen and serving areas. You can easily make your own disinfectant solution with orange oil.
Add 10 drops of sweet orange oil to a cup of warm water and use a clean sponge to wipe surfaces with this mixture. Allow to dry naturally. Orange oil is non-toxic, so you don’t need to wipe down with water again. You can easy spray using a spritz bottle with the mixture and wipe them down. You will have a kitchen smelling and looking great. You can use this solution in commercial office buildings and save money by avoiding the use of chemical cleaning industrial products.
Door handles and knobs are full of germs as people transfer germs by constant use. Wiping them with orange oil in a cleaning solution can keep infection down to a minimum. Do this particularly during the cold and flu season to keep children from getting infected.
Treat Arthritis pain: Arthritis causes pain and swelling of joints which can be extremely debilitating. As we age, there can be bone deformities, loss of cartilage and related autoimmune diseases of the skin caused due to arthritis. Chronic inflammation is the main symptom of arthritis, so the anti-inflammatory property of orange oil can provide gradual relief.
Mix 10 – 15 drops of orange oil daily into a tablespoon of warm coconut or olive oil over very low heat.
